NHAI Clears ₹5,000 Crore Project to Ease Traffic Between South Delhi, IGI Airport, and Gurugram
New Delhi, June 11 – In a major infrastructure development, Delhi is set to get a 20 km long signal-free flyover connecting AIIMS in South Delhi to Mahipalpur, with further connectivity to IGI Airport and Gurugram. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), along with the Central Government, has given the green signal for the project aimed at decongesting traffic in the capital.
Project Overview and Route Details
The flyover will begin near AIIMS and extend to Mahipalpur, passing through key routes in South and Southeast Delhi. The corridor will later be extended to connect with the Gurugram-Faridabad Road, providing seamless access to areas like Dwarka and IGI Airport.
The estimated cost of the project is around ₹5,000 crore, and once completed, commuters will be able to reach the airport in just 20 minutes from South Delhi.
Current Connectivity Challenges
At present, commuters from Noida, Ghaziabad, and East Delhi rely on the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road, using the DND Flyway and roads via Faridabad to reach the airport or Gurugram. During peak hours, the Delhi-Gurugram Highway (NH-48) faces severe congestion, resulting in frequent traffic jams and delays.
How the New Flyover Will Help
Officials say the flyover will significantly reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion on existing routes. The elevated corridor will connect with Nelson Mandela Marg near Vasant Kunj, where a 5 km tunnel is also being planned to directly link the airport with the Dwarka Expressway.
Another new corridor will also be constructed to connect Gurugram and Faridabad, making the network more robust and accessible.
Conclusion
This new infrastructure project marks a major step toward improving Delhi’s road connectivity, especially for those commuting to the airport or Gurugram. With fast-track approvals and integration of tunnels and corridors, Delhi is moving closer to becoming a signal-free and traffic-efficient city.
