COVID-19 is making headlines again as cases rise in parts of Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong, and India. According to India’s Health Ministry, the country reported 257 active cases as of May 19, 2025, with 164 new cases in just one week. Most of these cases are mild, and no hospitalizations have been needed, which is a relief. Kerala leads with 69 new cases, followed by Maharashtra with 44, and Tamil Nadu with 34.
In Maharashtra, Mumbai’s KEM Hospital reported two deaths of patients who tested positive for COVID-19. However, doctors clarified that these patients, a 59-year-old with cancer and a 14-year-old with kidney disease, passed away due to their existing health conditions, not directly from COVID. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) assures people not to panic, as the virus is now considered endemic, meaning it’s a regular part of life but manageable. Maharashtra currently has 56 active cases.
Globally, Singapore saw a 28% jump in cases, reaching 14,200 in early May, while Hong Kong reported a high viral load in sewage and 31 deaths in a week. Despite this, health officials say the variants circulating aren’t more dangerous than before. India’s authorities are staying vigilant, monitoring cases through strong surveillance systems to catch any changes early.
