BJP Returns to Power in Delhi After 27 Years, After spending 57.6 Cr in Delhi Election

NEW DELHI, May 28: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a stunning comeback in Delhi by winning 48 out of 70 seats in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which ruled the capital for the last ten years, could manage only 22 seats. The Congress, once a dominant force in Delhi, failed to win even a single seat for the third time in a row.

The elections were announced on January 7, 2025, and the voting process ended on February 8. Results declared shortly after showed a clear majority for the BJP, bringing the party back to power in Delhi after 27 long years.

BJP Spent Big to Win Big

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the BJP spent a total of ₹57.65 crore on its election campaign. This is a 40% increase compared to the ₹41.06 crore spent in the 2020 Delhi elections.

Out of the total amount, ₹39.1 crore was used for general party promotion, including rallies, advertisements, and outreach programs. Around ₹18.5 crore was given to its 68 candidates, with each receiving around ₹25 lakh for their individual campaigns.

In comparison, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spent ₹14.5 crore in total. Of this, ₹12.1 crore was used for general party propaganda and ₹2.4 crore was spent on its candidates. The party’s low spending compared to BJP is being seen as a major reason for its drop in seats.

The Congress party, despite not winning any seat, spent ₹46.18 crore — including ₹40.1 crore on party propaganda and ₹6.06 crore on candidates.

Funding and Donations

The BJP reported receiving ₹88.7 crore in funds during the election period, while Congress got ₹67.1 crore. The AAP’s total receipts were much lower, at ₹16.1 crore.

This difference in funding reflects in the scale of the parties’ campaigns. From large rallies and social media campaigns to high-profile advertisements, BJP’s campaign dominated the public eye.

Historic Win for BJP

This victory is historic for the BJP as it marks the end of AAP’s decade-long rule under Arvind Kejriwal and brings the party back to power in Delhi after nearly three decades. The BJP’s return is being seen as a major political shift in the capital.

The saffron party has not only regained the trust of Delhi voters but also managed to capture a strong majority in the assembly. Political experts believe that BJP’s aggressive campaigning and high public engagement helped swing the vote in their favor.
