AIDA Pushes for Higher Ethanol Blending in Fuel

The All India Distillers Association (AIDA) has urged the government to increase ethanol blending in petrol from the current 20% to 30%, marking a significant step in India’s energy security and sustainable fuel strategy. Discussions are also underway to explore ethanol use in diesel, further reducing dependence on imported crude oil.

Ethanol: A Strategic Fuel Option

Amid rising global crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions, India is actively seeking ways to reduce fuel import bills. Ethanol has emerged as a key domestic alternative. In a letter to Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, AIDA emphasized the need to focus on flex-fuel vehicles capable of running on different ethanol blends, including E30 (30% ethanol).

This move is not just about fuel; it is part of India’s broader strategy to strengthen energy security and minimize foreign exchange outflow caused by oil imports.

Current Achievements in Ethanol Blending

Over the past decade, India has made substantial progress in ethanol production and blending. While petrol previously contained only 1–2% ethanol, the government’s proactive policies have raised this to 20% in many regions. According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this step has reduced India’s petrol imports by over 4.5 crore barrels annually.

AIDA notes that India achieved the 20% blending target ahead of schedule due to the combined efforts of the government and the industry. Now, the association advocates moving forward to E30 blending, which could further cut crude oil imports and provide significant economic relief.

The Case for Flex-Fuel Vehicles

AIDA has called for rapid adoption of flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs). These vehicles can operate on varying ethanol blends, even up to 100% ethanol, similar to successful models in Brazil. Encouraging FFVs in India would ensure consistent demand for ethanol, benefit farmers by providing better prices for sugarcane and other crops, and promote domestic fuel production.

Expanding Ethanol Beyond Petrol

The association also recommends promoting ethanol use beyond vehicles. Ethanol-based burners and cooking systems could be introduced in homes and commercial kitchens, particularly in rural areas and smaller cities, replacing traditional wood or fossil fuel-based cooking methods. This step would enhance energy sustainability and reduce environmental impact.

Exploring Ethanol in Diesel

AIDA has proposed experimenting with ethanol in diesel as well. Successful blending could lower diesel costs and broaden ethanol’s market. The government has already initiated related projects. In August last year, Nitin Gadkari highlighted trials with isobutanol, an advanced biofuel, including engines running on 10% isobutanol-diesel blends and research into 100% isobutanol-powered engines in collaboration with Kirloskar.

Increasing ethanol blending to 30% (E30) could:
