India is set to get its first-ever driverless pod taxi, a major step toward modernizing urban transportation. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently inaugurated the groundbreaking ceremony for this innovative project, which aims to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in Mumbai.

Automated Pod Taxi Project Overview

The driverless pod taxi system is being developed as an automated rapid transit system connecting Kurla and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The project will be implemented in phases, with the first phase expected to be completed within ten months. The first phase of the project covers a distance of 3.36 kilometers between Bandra (East) and Kurla. Eventually, the entire route will span 8.85 kilometers, featuring 22 air-conditioned stations spaced roughly 200 meters apart. Key areas such as LBS Road, Kalanagar, and BKC will be directly connected, improving accessibility between residential zones and Mumbai’s major commercial hubs.

Features of the Driverless Pods

Each pod is designed to accommodate up to six passengers, operating on a fixed track powered by battery technology. The pods will run at a maximum speed of 40 km/h and maintain a short 15-second interval between vehicles. Passengers will only stop at designated stations selected during their ride, ensuring a faster and smoother travel experience.

The project is being executed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. A dedicated depot will be constructed at Bandra East to manage the pods and maintenance activities.
