Chester-le-Street, June 6 – England started their three-match T20 series against West Indies with a dominant 21-run win, thanks to a stunning knock by Jos Buttler, who narrowly missed out on his third T20I century. Buttler’s 96 off 59 balls laid the foundation for England’s total of 188/6, before their bowlers restricted the visitors to 167/9.
Buttler Shines with Explosive 96
Jos Buttler turned on the heat with an aggressive innings, smashing six fours and four sixes. After England lost opener Ben Duckett early, Buttler teamed up with debutant Jamie Smith to stabilize the innings. Buttler reached his half-century in just 25 balls, showcasing his trademark power-hitting and smart placement.
Despite the West Indies’ spin attack tightening the screws during the middle overs—particularly Gudakesh Motie, who didn’t concede a boundary—Buttler kept the scoreboard ticking. His knock included a range of innovative shots, including a reverse-swat that thrilled the crowd.
England Lose Wickets But Post Competitive Total
England’s innings slowed down in the second half as they lost key wickets. Jamie Smith was dismissed by Romario Shepherd, while captain Harry Brook fell to Roston Chase trying a risky reverse hit. Andre Russell also struck, trapping Tom Banton LBW, leaving England at 116/4 after 12 overs.
However, Buttler held firm and kept finding boundaries. He looked set for a century but was dismissed LBW by Alzarri Joseph on 96 after a successful DRS review, bringing an end to a memorable innings.
Liam Dawson Stars with the Ball
Chasing 189, West Indies struggled to build partnerships. England’s bowlers kept things tight, with left-arm spinner Liam Dawson emerging as the star. Dawson claimed 4 wickets for just 20 runs, including the key scalps of Nicholas Pooran and Sherfane Rutherford.
Despite a few big hits from Rovman Powell and Andre Russell, the Windies never gained momentum and finished at 167/9 in their 20 overs.
England Take 1-0 Lead in Series
This victory gives England a 1-0 lead in the series, with Jos Buttler leading from the front and Dawson earning the Player of the Match award. The next match promises more action as both teams look to make their mark before the T20 World Cup.
