Monsoon rains hit hard; five dead in Assam and Mizoram, flooding continues in coastal areas

Heavy monsoon rains brought life to a standstill across several parts of India on May 31, 2025. While Kerala and coastal Karnataka witnessed intense flooding, northeastern states like Assam, Mizoram, and Meghalaya were hit by deadly landslides and storms.

Kerala and Karnataka Battling Floods

Monsoon rains intensified over the Kerala-Karnataka coast on Saturday morning, submerging homes and forcing hundreds to flee to relief camps. In Kerala, heavy rain flooded many low-lying areas. Authorities acted swiftly to move people to safety.

Karnataka’s Belandur Gram Panchayat in Puttur Taluk recorded a staggering 480.5 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours. This was the highest in the state, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). However, officials reported that the rain intensity decreased slightly in the Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday.

Assam: Landslide Claims Lives

Assam faced tragedy as at least three people died in a landslide in Guwahati. The city, along with other western and southern parts of the state, has been hit hard by torrential rains. Flooding has been reported in several areas, including Lakhimpur, leading to roadblocks and property damage.

Mizoram: Hotel Collapse Kills Five

In Lawngtlai, Mizoram, heavy rainfall triggered a collapse of houses and a hotel on Friday night. Five people are feared dead, according to officials. Rescue operations are underway as local teams search for survivors in the debris. Landslides have also affected parts of Nagaland and Meghalaya.

Meghalaya: Three Dead, Dozens of Homes Damaged

Three people died in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills due to heavy rainfall. Among the victims were a 50-year-old woman, a 35-year-old man, and a 15-year-old boy. The woman died in a landslide, the man drowned in floodwaters, and the boy was crushed under a fallen tree.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased.

The intense rains also damaged 117 houses and affected vital infrastructure in the area. The worst-hit localities include Polo Colony, Sigum Rijo, Sigin Colony, Bukpen Colony, and Forest Colony.

Arunachal Pradesh: No Casualties, But Heavy Damage

In Arunachal Pradesh, Upper Subansiri district saw major damage due to the relentless rain. Although no deaths were reported, infrastructure and homes have been significantly affected.

Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo, along with district officials, visited the affected areas and urged residents in vulnerable zones to relocate to safer places. A prohibitory order was issued to keep people alert and safe.
