Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai – May 21, 2025: Mumbai Indians delivered a commanding performance to secure a 59-run victory over Delhi Capitals and book the final playoff spot in IPL 2025. With this result, Delhi Capitals have been officially eliminated from the tournament.
After being asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians put up a competitive total of 180/5 in their 20 overs. The standout performer was Suryakumar Yadav, who anchored the innings with an unbeaten 73 off just 43 balls. His explosive knock included 7 fours and 4 sixes and came at a crucial time when MI were losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite a few quick dismissals, Suryakumar ensured MI reached a defendable total on a pitch that was not very easy to bat on.
Among the bowlers for Delhi, Mukesh Kumar picked up two wickets but was expensive, conceding 48 runs in his four-over spell. Delhi’s bowling unit struggled to contain runs, especially in the final overs, which proved costly in the end.
Delhi Capitals suffered a major setback before the match as their regular captain Axar Patel missed the game due to illness. His absence was clearly felt, both in leadership and team balance.
In response, Delhi Capitals faltered in their chase and were bowled out well short of the target. Mumbai’s bowlers showed great discipline and teamwork. Jasprit Bumrah was at his best, taking 3 wickets for just 12 runs, while Mitchell Santner also impressed with figures of 3 for 11. Their combined efforts ensured DC were never in the hunt during the chase.
This clinical performance not only earned MI the fourth and final playoff berth but also ended Delhi Capitals’ hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
With this win, Mumbai Indians join the top three teams in the IPL 2025 playoffs and will look to carry this momentum into the knockout stage. Meanwhile, it’s back to the drawing board for Delhi as their campaign comes to an end.
