Residents advised to stay indoors as weather department predicts rough conditions
Dehradun, May 25 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a storm warning for several districts in Uttarakhand, predicting rain along with thunder and lightning in the coming days. The alert has been sounded for regions including Dehradun, Nainital, Tehri, Pauri, Almora, and Champawat, where weather conditions are expected to remain unstable.
According to the IMD, the change in weather is due to active western disturbances passing over the region. Light to moderate rainfall is likely, but in some places, especially in the hills, heavy showers and strong winds could occur.
Officials said thunderstorms and lightning may strike in the late afternoon and evening hours. The department has also not ruled out the possibility of hailstorm activity in isolated areas.
“The next 48 hours are critical. People living in vulnerable areas, especially near riverbanks or landslide-prone zones, should remain alert,” said a senior IMD official. “We have asked local authorities to keep disaster response teams ready.”
Due to the forecast, the State Disaster Management Authority has asked tourists and trekkers to take precautions and avoid visiting high-altitude regions for now. Local administrations in the warned districts have been told to remain on high alert and ensure emergency services are in place.
Schools in some areas may also be asked to remain shut if the weather worsens, though no such decision has been officially announced yet.
Meanwhile, the sudden weather change has brought relief from the rising temperatures, especially in the plains of Uttarakhand. However, strong winds and heavy rain could also damage crops and infrastructure if the storm intensifies.
Residents are advised to avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning, stay away from electrical poles, and keep emergency kits handy. Farmers have also been advised to secure their produce and protect livestock.
The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary. People can follow the official website or social media pages of the Meteorological Department for real-time information.
As the hills brace for turbulent weather, safety remains the top priority for both citizens and the administration.
