Fear and Anxiety Reportedly Growing Ahead of Meta Layoffs
As fresh reports of layoffs at Meta continue to surface, a former employee has revealed what the company’s internal environment looked like before previous large-scale job cuts. According to the ex-employee, the atmosphere inside Meta offices became so tense that workers started taking free snacks, drinks, and even chargers home out of fear of losing their jobs.
The revelations have once again highlighted the uncertainty many employees in the tech industry are facing amid repeated rounds of layoffs and restructuring.
Former Employee Shares Experience on Social Media
Former Meta employee Adele Wu shared her experience in a post on X, describing the emotional pressure employees faced during earlier layoffs at the company.
She said that during her final year at Meta, she witnessed four to five rounds of layoffs. However, according to her, the anxiety surrounding the upcoming layoffs scheduled for May 20 feels very different and more intense.
Meta is reportedly planning another major workforce reduction that could impact nearly 8,000 employees. While the company has not officially confirmed all details, discussions around job cuts have increased concerns among workers.
‘Doomsday’ Feeling Inside Meta Offices
Adele Wu recalled the period before Meta’s first major layoffs in 2022, describing the office environment as similar to a “doomsday scenario.”
According to her social media post, employees became extremely nervous about their future. Some workers reportedly started filling their bags with free office snacks, beverages, and accessories like chargers before the layoffs were announced.
She explained that many employees either hoped they would survive the layoffs or worried deeply because their jobs were their primary source of financial stability.
Wu also stated that despite changes within the company since 2021, the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty before layoffs has remained largely unchanged.
Meta’s Historic Layoffs Began in 2022
Meta conducted its first large-scale layoffs in 2022 during its 18-year history. At that time, the company laid off around 11,000 employees as part of a broader cost-cutting strategy.
Reports suggested that heavy investments in the metaverse, combined with increasing focus on artificial intelligence and automation, contributed to the company’s restructuring plans.
Since then, the tech giant has continued making organizational changes while shifting priorities toward AI development and operational efficiency.

Following Adele Wu’s post, several current and former tech employees shared their own experiences online.
One user mentioned being present during every major round of layoffs at Meta and said that while the current situation may not feel as severe as the first two rounds, anxiety and frustration are still widespread across the company.
Another user jokingly described waking up at 3 a.m. repeatedly to check emails, fearing they might receive what employees called the “email of doom” announcing job termination.
Many commenters also said that repeated layoffs across the IT industry have significantly affected employee morale and mental well-being.
