Cyber Scammers Targeting Char Dham Pilgrims Through Fake Booking Offers

Police authorities have issued an important advisory for pilgrims planning to visit the Char Dham Yatra, warning them about a sharp rise in cyber fraud cases. Fraudsters are reportedly targeting devotees through fake helicopter booking services, hotel reservations, VIP darshan passes, and fake travel registration websites.

According to officials, several pilgrims have already suffered financial losses after falling victim to these online scams.

Police Take Action Against Fake Accounts and Websites

Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police, Niharika Tomar, stated that many devotees use helicopter services during the Char Dham Yatra to reach pilgrimage sites quickly and comfortably. Cyber criminals are exploiting this demand by creating fake advertisements and fraudulent booking platforms.

To tackle the issue, police formed a special monitoring team to track cyber fraud linked to helicopter booking scams and travel-related frauds.

The investigation team has already taken action against around 550 suspicious online accounts and platforms. These include:

  • Fake Facebook pages
  • Fraudulent Instagram accounts
  • Scam websites
  • WhatsApp numbers
  • Bank accounts used for illegal transactions

Police have also registered multiple FIRs, and further investigations are currently underway.

How Cyber Criminals Trap Pilgrims

According to police officials, scammers mainly attract victims using fake advertisements and attractive travel offers. Fraudsters often create websites and social media pages that look similar to official platforms.

Unsuspecting users are asked to make advance payments for helicopter tickets, hotel bookings, or VIP darshan services. Once the payment is made, the scammers disappear, leaving victims without any booking confirmation or refund.

In many cases, the fake websites closely resemble genuine government or travel portals, making it difficult for users to identify the fraud.

Important Safety Tips for Char Dham Yatra Travelers

Authorities have advised pilgrims to stay alert and follow basic online safety measures to avoid becoming victims of cyber fraud during the Char Dham Yatra season.

1. Use Only Official Websites

Always book helicopter tickets, hotels, and travel registrations through official government or authorized travel websites. Avoid booking through random social media links or unknown WhatsApp messages.

2. Verify Website URLs Carefully

Cyber criminals often create fake websites with URLs that closely resemble official platforms. Before making any payment, carefully check the spelling and authenticity of the website address.

3. Avoid Social Media Booking Offers

Police have warned people not to trust offers related to VIP darshan, discounted helicopter tickets, or urgent bookings shared on Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp.

4. Do Not Share Banking Information

Never share OTPs, banking passwords, UPI PINs, or personal financial details with unknown callers or websites.

5. Cross-Check Contact Numbers

Before making any booking, verify customer care numbers and travel agency details through official government tourism portals.

Authorities Urge Pilgrims to Stay Vigilant

With the Char Dham Yatra attracting thousands of devotees every year, cyber fraud cases tend to increase during the pilgrimage season. Police are continuously monitoring suspicious online activities and taking strict action against fraudsters.

Authorities have urged travelers to remain cautious while making online bookings and immediately report any suspicious activity or fraud attempt to the cyber crime helpline or local police.

By staying alert and using only trusted booking platforms, pilgrims can ensure a safe and hassle-free Char Dham Yatra experience.
